How to Adjust Your Baby Carrier
A comfortable baby carrier fit depends on more than tightening the straps. Your baby needs appropriate support, and the carrier needs to fit your body.
This guide covers general checks for a buckle carrier used in a front inward-facing position. Always follow your specific model’s instructions for fastening order, settings and carrying positions.
1. Check the Carrier Before Use
Inspect the fabric, seams, straps and buckles. Do not use a carrier with damaged parts.
Confirm that your baby meets the model’s requirements, then set the seat width and any newborn adjustments according to the manual.
2. Position the Waistband
Fasten the waistband securely in the location specified by the manufacturer. It should feel snug and stable.
Your baby should sit high enough for you to kiss the top of their head comfortably. Adjust the waistband position as instructed to achieve this.
3. Place and Support Your Baby
Keep a hand supporting your baby while positioning them and securing the carrier.
Settle them facing your body, with their bottom in the seat and their legs positioned according to the instructions. Check that the seat supports their thighs without forcing their knees apart.
4. Adjust the Shoulder Straps
Tighten the straps gradually until your baby stays close and supported. Avoid leaving enough looseness for them to slump or pull away from your body.
Check that the straps lie flat and all required buckles are securely fastened. Continue supporting your baby until the carrier is fully secured.
5. Complete the T.I.C.K.S. Check
Before moving around, check:
-
Tight: Your baby is held snugly against you.
-
In view at all times: You can see their face without moving fabric.
-
Close enough to kiss: Their head is within comfortable kissing distance.
-
Keep chin off chest: Their head is not folded forward.
-
Supported back: Their body is supported upright without slumping.
Keep their nose and mouth clear of fabric and your body.
6. Recheck After Moving
Walk a few steps, then reassess the fit. Check again whenever your baby changes position or another caregiver uses the carrier.
If you need to readjust substantially, stop and support your baby first.
